The New York Giants have reportedly made a stunning offer to star running back Saquon Barkley for a contract extension. Despite injuries hindering his playing time, the team is eager to keep him for more years.
Barkley’s entry into the league in 2018 as the second overall pick was highly anticipated, but injuries have plagued his career. His rookie contract ended in 2022, and the Giants placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on him for the 2023 season.
However, the team has until July 17th to offer Barkley a long-term deal, or he will become an unrestricted free agent after the season. The Giants have reportedly offered Barkley an average annual salary of $14 million, but the structure of the deal has been the main obstacle.
If the deal goes through, Barkley would become the third highest-paid running back in the NFL behind Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara. The Giants’ preference for quarterback Daniel Jones over Barkley has complicated negotiations, but talks have resumed.
