The Pittsburgh Steelers made a bold move with the 32nd pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, selecting cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from Penn State University. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior was widely regarded as one of the top defensive backs in this year’s draft class, with his combination of size, speed, and athleticism making him an attractive option for teams in need of help in the secondary.
The Steelers certainly fit that bill, as they ranked in the bottom half of the league in pass defense in 2022. With Porter Jr. in the fold, they have added a player who has the potential to become a shutdown corner at the next level. He excels in man coverage, using his length and agility to blanket receivers and break up passes. He also has the physicality and tackling ability to hold up in run support, making him a complete cornerback.
