WORLD POPULATION DAY : HISTORY, PURPOSE, SIGNIFICANCE

World Population Day

As a planet, we face numerous challenges regarding our future. Pollution, depletion of natural resources, and the climate change crisis are all major issues that must be addressed. Our greatest challenge, however, remains the world’s rapidly increasing population. Over the last 150 years, our planet has seen such a population explosion that it has rapidly become our biggest crisis. To bring focus to this problem of overpopulation, we celebrate World Population Day every year on July 11. This time, the 30th World Population Day will be celebrated.

Purpose of World Population Day:

World Population Day is observed every year on July 11. The primary goal of observing such a day is to raise awareness about the world’s growing population and the issues and problems that arise as a result of such overpopulation.

History of World Population Day:

Dr. Zacharia first proposed the event in his capacity as a World Bank demographer. During his presidency, the world’s population surpassed the five billion mark.

As a result, the governing council of UNDP (United Nations Development Program) decided in 1989 to designate July 11 as World Population Day. As a result, all of the United Nations’ participating nations have been commemorating this day in various ways for over three decades.

Significance of World Population Day:

The most obvious goal of World Population Day is to educate the entire population about the consequences of unchecked population growth. People must understand the impact it can have on the environment and the development of our world.

Overpopulation is causing the world’s natural resources to deplete rapidly. Some of these resources, such as fossil fuels, are non-renewable and are already causing major problems. Such depletion and scarcity are wreaking havoc on people’s livelihoods and daily lives.

Another important aspect of World Population Day is educating the general public on the importance of sustainable development. It is an effective way for us to mitigate the threat posed by population growth. It ensures that future generations will have access to the same benefits and resources that we do today.

Countries also use World Population Day to raise awareness and educate people about family planning, poverty, and human rights. The UN Population Division, in collaboration with the UNDP, works closely with various countries and other organizations to spread the message. They even plan and carry out a number of programs to educate people and help to reduce global overpopulation. Every country observes the day in its own unique way. Students participate, posters are created, events are held, and hopefully, the message is spread.

World Population Day 2023 Theme:

The theme of World Population Day 2023 is “Unleashing the Power of Gender Equality: Uplifting the Voices of Women and Girls to Unlock Our World’s Infinite Possibilities.”.
