Elon Musk’s Starlink Nears Approval for Satellite Services in India

Elon Musk’s Starlink set to revolutionize Indian telecom. Approval is expected next week, paving the way for satellite internet services in the country.

In a significant development, Elon Musk’s Starlink is on the cusp of gaining approval from the Indian government for its satellite internet services, potentially as early as next week. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is reportedly satisfied with Starlink’s clarification on its shareholding pattern, paving the way for regulatory consent.

Sources suggest that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) may issue a letter of intent (LoI) to Starlink soon. Once approved by Neeraj Mittal, the telecom Secretary, and Ashwani Vaishnav, the Minister of Communications, Starlink will become the third company authorized to offer satellite communication services in India, following Jio Satellite Communications and OneWeb.

Despite Mittal’s current absence from the PanIIT 2024 Event in the US and Vaishnav’s engagement at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the final regulatory steps are expected to proceed swiftly upon their return. Starlink’s entry into the Indian telecommunications landscape is poised to bring transformative changes and increased competition.

The imminent approval positions Starlink to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s satellite communication services, marking a significant milestone for Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture. SpaceX, however, has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this anticipated development.
