Why the Dallas Cowboys Traded for Trey Lance: Investing in the Future of the Quarterback Position

The Dallas Cowboys’ surprising trade for Trey Lance explained. Jerry Jones shares insights on adding a developmental QB to the roster.

In a move that raised eyebrows across the NFL landscape, the Dallas Cowboys recently acquired Trey Lance, despite already having an established starting quarterback in Dak Prescott. The trade, which sent shockwaves through the football world, left many wondering about the rationale behind this unexpected decision.

After a convincing 31-16 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in the preseason finale, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones shed light on the motivation behind the trade. According to Jones, it all comes down to having a developmental option at the most critical position in football – quarterback.

“He gives us an opportunity to do what we would always like to be doing,” Jones explained. “It would be ideal with Dak to have a young, prospective, developing quarterback that could just be in the room.”

The Cowboys’ acquisition of Lance came in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, making it a noteworthy move considering the young quarterback’s potential. Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, possesses an impressive array of physical attributes coveted in quarterbacks – size, athleticism, speed, and arm strength. However, his journey has been marked by injury setbacks and limited NFL experience. Lance’s 2021 season was cut short due to a broken ankle in Week 2, and his playing time has been relatively limited since his days at North Dakota State, attempting just 420 passes since 2018.

“We felt good about him with the evaluation we had for him at the draft,” Jones continued. “We felt good about what we’ve seen, tape that he’s had since he’s been in the NFL. And it’s one that we made the decision almost the minute we heard the name. Let’s get him.”

Notably, Jones mentioned that he did not consult Dak Prescott about the trade. Prescott, a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback, expressed his readiness to welcome Lance to the team, acknowledging the organization’s timeline and their commitment to strengthening the roster.

Trey Lance, entering his third season on his rookie contract, spent two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, where he appeared in eight games and made four starts. During his time in San Francisco, he completed 54.9% of his passes for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions, showcasing both passing and rushing ability.

The move to acquire Trey Lance underscores the Cowboys’ commitment to investing in the future of the quarterback position. While the team had considered selecting developmental quarterbacks in recent drafts, the opportunity to acquire Lance was too enticing to pass up. Executive Vice President Stephen Jones emphasized the value of this trade, trusting their initial evaluation of Lance’s potential.

“The problem is, we put third- and fourth-round grades on guys and they’re all gone by halfway through the second round,” Stephen Jones explained. “This was a great opportunity, we think, value-wise, to get a guy who has a bright future. At the end of the day, we’re really trusting exactly what we thought of him coming out.”

In summary, the Dallas Cowboys’ decision to trade for Trey Lance represents a strategic move to secure a developmental quarterback and fortify their quarterback room. While Dak Prescott remains the undisputed starter, the addition of Lance brings depth and potential for the Cowboys’ future.
