Chicago Bears appoint Eric Washington as defensive coordinator, bolstering their defense for the 2024 season. Exciting times ahead in the Windy City!
In a strategic move aimed at fortifying their defensive prowess, the Chicago Bears have officially hired Eric Washington as their new defensive coordinator. The announcement was made on Saturday, solidifying Washington’s return to the Windy City after serving as a defensive assistant from 2008-2009 and as the defensive line coach in 2010.
The 54-year-old Washington, who previously held the position of assistant head coach and defensive line coach with the Buffalo Bills, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Bears’ coaching staff. Head coach Matt Eberflus, who will continue calling defensive plays, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting Washington’s elite leadership skills and proven track record.
“We are excited to announce that Eric Washington will be joining our team as the defensive coordinator,” Eberflus said in a team statement. “His track record speaks for itself with coordinator experience as well as expertise in the area of defensive line. I want to thank the other outstanding candidates that applied for this position.”
Washington’s coaching journey has seen him contribute significantly to various NFL teams. Joining the Bills in 2020 as the defensive line coach, he steadily ascended to the role of senior defensive assistant and eventually took on the responsibilities of assistant head coach while continuing to oversee the defensive line. Under his guidance, the Bills’ defense in 2022 ranked second in the NFL, allowing just 286 points.
Before his stint in Buffalo, Washington spent a substantial period with the Carolina Panthers, serving as the defensive line coach from 2011 to 2017 and earning a promotion to defensive coordinator from 2018-2019.
Expressing his excitement about returning to the Chicago Bears, Washington stated in a team release, “My family and I are beyond excited to be returning to the Chicago Bears. It is humbling to have the opportunity to contribute to one of the most esteemed sports organizations in the world!”
The decision to bring in Washington follows the resignation of former defensive coordinator Alan Williams during the 2023 season. Eberflus took over the defensive play-calling duties for the remainder of the campaign, and despite early-season struggles, the defense experienced a positive turnaround in the second half, notably after the acquisition of Montez Sweat.
With the Bears now boasting a new offensive coordinator in Shane Waldron and Washington at the helm of the defense, the franchise looks toward the future with optimism. As they approach the 2024 NFL Draft, the team’s focus shifts to critical decisions, including whether to use the No. 1 overall pick on a quarterback or continue building around the talented Justin Fields for the upcoming season. General manager Ryan Poles and Coach Eberflus will play pivotal roles in shaping the team’s direction for the upcoming season.
