What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used health measurement based on an individual's height and weight. It provides a simple numeric indicator to help categorize weight status and identify potential health risks associated with being underweight, overweight, or obese.
BMI Categories
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
- Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9
- Obese: BMI 30 or greater
While BMI is a helpful screening tool, it does not measure body fat directly. Athletes or individuals with high muscle mass may have a higher BMI without excess body fat. Consult a healthcare provider for a thorough health assessment.
