After two relatively unsurprising days of roster moves, the Giants dropped a bombshell late Thursday afternoon by releasing inside linebacker Blake Martinez.
Tyre Phillips gained a roster spot after the veteran left.
Tyre Phillips, a 6-foot-5, 344-pound offensive lineman who was waived by the Baltimore Ravens.
It did very little to free up cap room for a team that is still over the salary cap by more than $5 million.
The Tennessee season opener on September 11 is still a little over a week away.
However, Martinez's departure did leave Don "Wink" Martindale, the first-year defensive coordinator, with a gap at inside linebacker.
At one inside linebacker position, Tae Crowder is anticipated to start.
The candidates in race to replace Martinez are as, Carter Coughlin, Micah McFadden and Austin Calitro.
Austin Calitro is the most experienced candidate for the position.
