The word "donut" comes from the Dutch word "doughnut", which means "a small ball of dough". The first recorded use of the word was in 1809 by Washington Irving in his book A History of New York.

The origin of donuts is unclear, but some historians believe they were invented by Dutch settlers in America, who fried balls of dough in oil and filled them with nuts or fruit.

Others claim they were brought to America by French immigrants, who made pastries called "beignets".

The hole in the middle of donuts was not always there. Some say it was created by a sailor named Hanson Gregory in 1847, who punched a hole in his doughnut to make it cook more evenly.

Others say it was done to save on ingredients or to make them easier to stack.

The largest donut ever made was a jelly-filled donut that weighed 1.7 tons and measured 16 feet in diameter. It was baked in Utica, New York, in 1993 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Salvation Army's Donut Day.

The most expensive donut in the world is the Golden Cristal Ube Donut, which costs $100 each. It is made with ube (a purple yam), Cristal champagne, and 24-karat gold flakes. It is sold at Manila Social Club in Brooklyn, New York.

The most donuts eaten in one sitting was 55 glazed donuts in eight minutes by Joey Chestnut, a competitive eater from California. He set the record at the Salvation Army World Donut Eating Championship in 2017.

The most popular donut flavor in America is glazed, followed by chocolate frosted and Boston cream. The least popular flavor is coconut cream.
