The first match in the US Open was expected as William's last match.

Everyone in the stadium was expecting serena's US Open journey with a win and the same thing happened.

Many well-known persons watched in the hopes that Williams would win the match and move on to play.

Dr. Ruth Westheimer sat next to Bill Clinton. Mike Tyson sat next to Navratilova. Gladys Knight was in attendance.

Queen Latifah read a poem in honour of Williams, and Spike Lee assisted with the pregame coin toss.

 Oprah Winfrey narrated a video that was shown after Williams' victory.

She certainly contributed, overcoming some early nerves to defeat Danka Kovinic of Montenegro, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the second round.

That means it all starts over again on Wednesday against Estonia's No. 2 Anett Kontaveit.

Williams announced her retirement from tennis earlier this month.
