Williams made her singles comeback at Wimbledon in June following a protracted injury layoff that had sparked rumours about her retirement.

Later in August, she plans to compete at the US Open, where she has won six of her major singles titles.

She has held the Women's Tennis Association (WTAsingles ) world No. 1 ranking for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks.

She is the player with the most Grand Slam singles titles (23), dating back to the Open Era.

The second-highest number ever (after Margaret Court's 24).

Five times, she was the year's top performer.

Serena Williams was coached by her parents, Oracene Price and Richard Williams, along with her older sister Venus.
