Huge numbers of flights were cancelled  when thunderstorms hit the East Coast's busiest airports.

More than 1,500 planes in the US were cancelled, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

Reagan National Airport outside of Washington, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia Airport in New York once again ranked first for cancellations.

One of the worst days for flight cancellations in the previous six weeks occurred on Thursday with airlines cancelling 1,248 flights across the country.

370 flights, or 9% of Southwest Airlines' schedule for Thursday, were cancelled.

Southwest postponed another 1,800 flights, accounting for 46 percent of their Thursday itinerary.

According to FlightAware, there were over 7,700 recorded delays in the United States on Friday.

US airlines have adjusted their schedules to reduce air traffic interruptions .

By Friday afternoon, American Airlines had cancelled almost 200 flights.
