The offense of the New England Patriots had a difficult start to the season, and Mac Jones nearly suffered an injury.

Following Sunday's 20-7 loss to the Miami Dolphins, the quarterback had X-rays done on a back injury.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the outcomes were unfavorable.

When it gets back to its facilities, the team will assess him further.

Against a Miami defense that was swarming, New England struggled mightily.

Jones completed 21 of his 30 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown, but he also fumbled and lost an interception.

The Patriots came under some criticism for not announcing an offensive coordinator.

The starters struggled in their sparse preseason action and received mixed reviews during training camp.

Concerns about New England's offense won't be allayed by Sunday's performance.

If Jones is given the all-clear to play, he will travel to Pittsburgh the following Sunday to take on a Steelers defense that

started the season with seven sacks and four interceptions in a victory over the Cincinnati Bengals that required overtime.
