On Tuesday, Brett Favre, a former NFL quarterback, ran into some trouble.

According to a Mississippi Today investigation, Favre received welfare funds from Phil Bryant to assist in the construction of a new volleyball complex at the University of Southern Mississippi.

The news organisation published texts exchanged between Bryant and Favre between 2017 and 2019.

These messages were submitted on Monday in the civil case against Mississippi involving misused welfare payments.

Bryant and Favre discussed diverting at least $5 million in welfare funds to help build the Southern Miss volleyball facility in the texts.

When these texts were sent, Favre's daughter was a member of the Golden Eagles' volleyball team.

In the aftermath of the scandal, Fox Sports analyst Shannon Sharpe has some harsh words for Favre.

The defence of Favre has refuted claims that the former quarterback was aware he was collecting welfare benefits.

No criminal charges have been brought against Favre or Bryant.
