The NFL's all-star game will be replaced by a flag football game and a multi-day skills competition involving AFC and NFC players.

Football and non-football challenges are among the other competitions.

NFL executive Peter O'Reilly said, "The Pro Bowl is something we've been looking at for a while, really continuing to improve."

Reilly said, "After the game last year, we basically predicated the decision on a lot of internal discussions, collecting input from GMs and coaches, and getting a lot of input from players".

Reilly said, "We believe there is a great chance to break from the norm and implement something completely new in this situation".

Reilly said, "We came to the conclusion that the objective should be to positively, jovially, and competitively honour 88 of the best NFL stars".

The new format will be shaped and promoted in part by Peyton Manning and his Omaha Productions Company.

The current ESPN commentator and Hall of Famer will also serve as the conference coach for the flag football match.
