The San Francisco 49ers' quarterback of the future is still most likely Trey Lance.

Jimmy Garoppolo has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to prove the San Francisco braintrust wrong about his replacement.

The 49ers tried to get rid of him, failed, and are now fortunate to have him waiting in the wings.

Now Goroppolo has the opportunity to show the organisation that he is the better choice in 2022. Perhaps even furthur.

During training camp, former backup quarterback Trey Lance was named the 2022 starter over Garoppolo.

Garoppolo and the 49ers reached an agreement on a one-year contract extension.

He had a fully guaranteed base salary of $6.5 million as part of the contract.

Garoppolo entered the game in the first quarter against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 after Lance left with a broken ankle.

Garoppolo threw for 154 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for another in the 27-7 victory.
