Manchester City defeated Chelsea 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to advance to the Carabao Cup third round.

Riyad Mahrez of Manchester City scored on 52 minutes with a well-taken free kick.

City's lead was extended when forward Julian Alvarez converted a rebound from Riyad Mahrez's attempt.

As a result, City's quest for a fifth Carabao Cup championship in six seasons continues.

Chelsea, who were defeated in last year's final by Liverpool, are eliminated in the third round.

Christian Pulisic of the United States started and played the entire match, with his greatest chance coming in the early stages, which he failed to capitalise on by mishitting a rolling ball across the box.

Kalvin Phillips has been plagued by injuries since joining City last summer.

On the 50-minute mark, Phillips made a comeback from the bench, and he will be keeping a close eye on England manager Gareth Southgate when he chooses his World Cup roster on Thursday.

Phillips told Sky Sports about the squad announcement: "Anything can happen." I'm optimistic, but with the amount of game time I've had, I realise there's always room for uncertainty.
