She is best known for playing Nyota Uhura in "Star Trek - The Original Series "and its film sequels.

For African American actresses on American television, Nichols' portrayal of Uhura was groundbreaking.

Nichols volunteered her time from 1977 to 2015 to promote NASA's programmes and to recruit diverse astronauts, including women and ethnic minorities.

Nichols wrote in her autobiography that she was romantically involved with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry for a few years in the 1960s.

Kyle Johnson was born on August 14, 1951, and was the only child Johnson and Nichols shared.
