Benedict XVI, a retired pope, passes away at 95

The 95-year-old Pope Benedict XVI passed away on Saturday in Vatican City. 

According to the Vatican press office, Benedict had been experiencing deteriorating health due to his elderly age. 

Pope Benedict XVI, the first pope to resign since the 15th century.

Pope Benedict XVI was also known as Benedictus XVI, Benedetto XVI, or simply Benedikt XVI.

Benedict was the head of the Catholic Church and the ruler of the Vatican City State from 19 April 2005 until his resignation on February 28, 2013.

Benedict was born as Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger on April 16, 1927.

Benedict was chosen to serve as pope following the passing of Pope John Paul II in 2005.

Benedict decided to use the title "pope emeritus," Upon his resignation which he kept up until his passing in 2022.

 Benedict's funeral will be officiated by Pope Francis on Thursday in St. Peter's Square.
