A sinkhole 656 feet deep occurred in the mining town of Tierra Amarilla in Chile's Copiapo Province.

Officials are investigating what caused the large sinkhole near Tierra Amarilla, a mining town.

The sinkhole is also quite wide.

The National Geology and Mining Service initially estimated the diameter to be around 82 feet wide.

But upon closer study, it became clear that the sinkhole was significantly larger.

The organisation stated  that it is almost 105 feet wide. (At its base, the Washington Monument is only 55 feet wide.)

There is a lot of water there, but no material has been found.

The Canadian Lundin Mining Corp. is the owner of the property where the sinkhole first emerged.

Since its discovery, the sinkhole has remained stable.
