Murdaugh was charged with insurance fraud in the scheme to kill himself, which he survived last September.

According to police, the shooting was planned so that his surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, could collect a $10 million insurance payout.

Murdaugh admitted to plotting his own death in an affidavit, according to a state police agency last September.

In November, a state grand jury indicted him on 27 charges stemming from schemes to defraud law clients and associates, as well as to launder more than $4.8 million.

On Thursday, his attorneys issued a statement denying the murder charges and stating that they would file a motion for a speedy trial.
