The New England Patriots have surprised many by promoting rookie QB Malik Cunningham from the practice squad to their 53-man roster.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Patriots signed Cunningham to a three-year deal as part of this unexpected move.
The Patriots now have four quarterbacks on their roster: Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe, Will Grier, and Malik Cunningham, with speculation about potential cuts.
Malik Cunningham, who played for Louisville from 2017 to 2022, initially joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent and spent time on the practice squad.
The three-year contract given to Cunningham suggests the Patriots have significant confidence in his long-term potential as a quarterback.
With Jones being benched in the last two games, the question arises of whether Belichick might start Zappe or Cunningham over Jones in future matchups, such as the game against the Raiders.
