49ers coach Kyle Shanahan revealed he offered Bill Belichick a job earlier this offseason, hoping to make him the team's defensive coordinator.
Shanahan was so excited about the thought of landing Belichick that he offered him the freedom to choose his role. "Whatever he wanted to do," Shanahan said.
Belichick appreciated the offer but turned it down politely. Shanahan said, "He was very nice and appreciative, but he politely turned me down."
Shanahan expressed his admiration for Belichick, noting his surprise that the 72-year-old was available. "I can't believe that he's not a head coach of a team right now," he said.
Although not coaching, Belichick will remain involved in football. He will serve as an analyst on "Inside the NFL" and be a weekly guest on ESPN's Monday night "ManningCast."
Belichick will also spend time supporting his son, Steve, who recently became the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington.
Belichick plans to return to coaching in 2025. Shanahan anticipates this, saying, "I'm sure he's going to be back in the league next year."
Shanahan acknowledged the possibility of facing Belichick in the future, especially if he ends up coaching in the NFC West.
The 2024 season marks the first time in 49 years that Belichick won't be coaching. His career began in 1975 with the Baltimore Colts.
Bill Belichick's decision to take a break from coaching highlights his unique position in the NFL. All eyes will be on his potential return in 2025.
