Panthers Preseason Opener: Insights and Challenges

The Carolina Panthers suffered a 27-0 defeat in their preseason opener against the New York Jets. Here are some rapid observations from Bank of America Stadium’s press box.

Bryce Young’s Efforts:

In his inaugural preseason game, Young had three drives, with two of them ending in three-and-outs. Despite his efforts, the offensive line’s performance fell short, leading to a sack and three quarterback hits. While there weren’t remarkable highlights, Young demonstrated wise decision-making and protected the ball well. Considering the Jets’ formidable front seven and the Panthers’ incomplete offensive line, it wasn’t an exhilarating debut, but it wasn’t discouraging for Young.

Struggle for Separation:

A significant challenge for the Panthers was the receivers’ inability to create separation. The initial completions saw running backs and tight ends as primary targets for four out of the first six and seven out of the initial twelve passes. The starting wide receivers, Adam Thielen and DJ Chark had minimal involvement, accounting for just one catch each. Excluding them, only three passes reached receivers throughout three quarters. This approach of numerous check-downs against a Jets secondary that was without key players impacted the team’s offensive efficiency.

Corral’s Performance:

Looking solely at the box score might paint a positive picture of Corral’s performance, but the full story unveils some struggles. He fumbled twice and missed several potential completions due to holding onto the ball, resulting in four sacks. His few inaccuracies were also evident in his off-target throws.
