In yet another stunning move, Howie Roseman, the ever-active general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles, has orchestrated a trade to bring star safety Kevin Byard to the City of Brotherly Love. This trade with the Tennessee Titans is a significant coup for the Eagles, who have been plagued by injuries in their secondary this season and were in dire need of safety help.
As reported by NFL on X (Formerly Twitter), the Eagles will part ways with safety Terrell Edmunds, a former first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, along with their 2024 fifth- and sixth-round draft selections in exchange for Kevin Byard.
Byard, a two-time first-team All-Pro and former interceptions leader is expected to bolster a defense that showcased its strength in a dominant performance against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night.
While Kevin Byard may not have been at his absolute best early this season in Tennessee, his reputation as a do-it-all safety precedes him. A native of Philadelphia, Byard is known for his stellar ability against the run and his exceptional ball-hawking skills in coverage. Over eight seasons with the Titans, he has amassed an impressive 27 interceptions, deflected 63 passes, and recorded 674 tackles.
Notably, Byard is one of just two players in the NFL with over 600 tackles and 20 or more interceptions since 2017, the other being Jordan Poyer. His 27 interceptions also rank as the second-most in the league, with only Xavien Howard having more, according to NFL Research. Furthermore, Byard tops the list of safeties with 59 passes defensed since 2017.
In Philadelphia, Kevin Byard will join Reed Blankenship, who is currently dealing with an injury, to form a formidable safety duo. Their combined skills and experience promise to greatly improve the Eagles’ secondary.
The Eagles’ decision to acquire Byard was prompted by the need for versatility and playmaking in their safety corps, especially after the departure of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson this offseason. This trade, along with their earlier acquisition of star receiver A.J. Brown from the Titans in a draft-day trade in 2022, underscores the Eagles’ commitment to making bold moves and building a competitive roster.
As for the Titans, their decision to part with Kevin Byard signals that they may be sellers ahead of the October 31 trade deadline. The Titans entered the day with only six draft picks, and General Manager Ran Carthon may look to replenish their draft capital by moving other assets in the coming week.
The addition of Kevin Byard to the Eagles’ roster is undoubtedly a significant move, one that could have a substantial impact on their defense and their prospects for the rest of the season. Eagles fans can look forward to seeing Byard’s playmaking abilities in action as he joins the team.
