Possession does not decide the win
Germany controlled the majority of possession and more shots that were on goal, but Japan remained composed when necessary and attacked when they had the chance.
Germany failed to capitalize on their early supremacy.
With more than 80% of the possession and most of the chances at the end of the first half, Germany was the clear winner.
It seemed inevitable that they would score a second goal even at the start of the second half. However, they blew numerous opportunities, and in the end, they only had themselves to blame.
Even after scoring their second goal, Japan didn’t let up and kept trying to score. You can’t help but wonder whether this German team was a little too relaxed. Rudiger won’t like reflecting on his bravado in the past.
For Germany, it’s back to the drawing board.
In their subsequent match on Sunday against Spain, Germany will now need to rebound strongly.
The injury time was seven minutes,
which is less than typical for this tournament.
Germany 1-2 Japan at 90 minutes.
