Tech.

A federal judge ruled that Google illegally monopolized online search and advertising by paying billions to companies like Apple and Samsung to make Google the default search engine on their devices.

U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta declared, “Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” highlighting Google's abuse of market dominance.

This ruling marks the most significant legal action against a major tech giant in over two decades and could reshape how Google does business.

Attorney General Merrick Garland celebrated the decision, stating, “This victory against Google is a historic win for the American people.”

Google plans to appeal, arguing that the decision ignores consumer preference for their search engine, as stated by Kent Walker, president of global affairs at Google.

Following the ruling, shares in Google’s parent company, Alphabet, fell nearly 5%, indicating investor concern.

If upheld, this decision could boost other antitrust cases against major tech players like Amazon, Apple, and Meta.

The ruling did not include specific remedies, but potential actions could involve ending Google's exclusive device deals and restoring competition to the marketplace.
